Why?

For some reason, mechanical bulls have figured large in my life lately. First after the Franz F. show, and now, in L.A. I went out with Teddi and her lovely friends last Friday, and after a heavy night of drinking and dancing, somehow ended up in downtown L.A. at the Saddle Ranch. This place was insane. Packed to the gills, ten guys to every girl, and a beautiful mechanical bull in the middle of it all. At one point in the evening, I wandered in just in time to see Teddi being thrown off. I was so happy that she did it! The highlight of the evening was definitely the signs in the bathroom. They were advertising portion control and how everyone needs to start practicing this. Can you believe that? Only in L.A.!

Smogalicious

Hey Everybody! So I am keeping a positive outlook on life, in spite of losing my roommate and taking the easy way out by moving into a extended stay hotel. Expensive, but soooo easy. Everything is fine here. I am lonely, but I have the TV. and Ikea. The Ikea here is right across the street from the Burbank High School. Genius! Also, the abundance of Spanish radio stations is keeping me entertained. I have learned to adapt to the ways of driving here, honking and doing whatever you want, but then again, I have not ventured onto the freeway after I got off of it yesterday. Tomorrow night Teddi is taking me out to a club for 80's night with her new friends, so that will be fun. I cannot wait for the luxury of a refrigerator, I am so sick of low carb bars and fast food. Stay tuned for news of LA nightlife and school, starting on Monday! Love ya!

Park Kitchen

Park Kitchen

Where to go for lunch? was the question on Lauren and my lips this afternoon. We had originally planned on going to
see the incomparable Don Clarkson give a talk on visualization at the downtown library, but he was "ill" so it didn't happen. So our thoughts turned to lunch. Sadly, the nearby Vat and Tonsure has closed down, but the uber-organized Lauren has a list of restaurants in her car that we want to try. We decided on Park Kitchen (422 NW 8th), we have never been but heard many great things. Today was a cold, rainy and windy day and as we parked we could see the inviting lights of the restaurant across the street. We stepped into the cute space, and loved it at first sight. When you first walk in, there is a long bar to your left, and a few tables to the right, next to a large window that can be rolled up in the summer, looking out into the park, perhaps spying upon a nearby game of Bocce. On the bar are a few glass jars filled with different varieties of cookies to buy. We walked past the bar, into the cozy back room, with a charming open kitchen. Amazing smells wafted about the room, and continued to do so throughout the entire meal. The walls are painted a bright green, and there is a bench around the entire restaurant, with just a few cozy tables. The menu is small, but pretty perfect. For lunch, there were soups, salads, and entrees. There was the most interesting dish, a house-made hot dog, bun, ketchup and potato chips. There is something so intriguing about taking a casual meal like that and making it the most high quality, fresh, and delicious that you can. I didn't get it today, but swore that I would next time. I instead ordered the Crispy salmon with saffron and squash and an iced tea. Lauren ordered the Pulled pork sandwich with the aforementioned house-made potato chips. Both were incredibly tasty. But we saved the best for last, in the form of Pumpkin creme brulee with almond brittle and gingersnap cookies. OH MY GOD, SO GOOD! I could have eaten like three of them. Every part of the dish was so choice, I don't even like gingersnap cookies, but these were perfect, crisp on the outside, but chewy on the inside, with a smattering of sugar on the top. And that almond brittle was the perfect accompaniment to the spicy pumpkin creme brulee. I so enjoyed my lunch there, Lauren and I had a lovely time catching up on all the latest gossip, the Tyra show, Sarah Jessica's decorator, you know-the usual. I highly recommend Park Kitchen, and can't wait to go back for Brunch!

Is Anna Wintour living in a Haylie Mills film?

Anna Wintour

The latest news, hot off the press:

Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour was attacked with a tofu pie this past weekend when anti-fur demonstrators turned on her at Paris fashion week.
Wintour, who controversially supports the use of fur in fashion, was attending the Chloe fashion show in the French capital on Saturday when the vegetarian food struck her.
Dan Matthews, vice president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), said the attack was instigated by the magazine's decision to run advertisements for fur-based clothing - despite their offer of matching the fee in return for PETA anti-fur advertisements.
The incident marks the second time Wintour has been subject to a tofu beating in one year.

In spite of my love for Vogue (and fur), we all know that Anna Wintour is an uptight bitch who can't hold a candle to past Vogue editors (like Diana Vreeland). I do think this is slightly funny, but it must be hard to live your life just waiting for that pie in the face, over and over again. Hee Hee.

The tale of Franz Ferdinand and the Old West

Franz Ferdinand
Originally uploaded by Blend10.
Derek and I were lucky enough to attend the Franz Ferdinand concert last night, and even though we have seen them twice already, if felt like the first time. We arrived at the Roseland right after the first opening band, Copy Cut, started and they were excellent. Rock/Disco, with good haircuts and awesome dance moves. I was so in love that I bought their CD on the spot. Let's hope that they are as good on tape as they are live! Then the second opening band, TV on the Radio, came out. I was NOT impressed. I don't get this band. And I couldn't understand a word they said. (Yes, I am officially an old person). It was too loud with too many guitars. I was desperate for my Franz fix. Finally, finally they arrived on stage. Lead singer Alex was wearing a fitted bright red shirt, unbuttoned just enough. The rest of the band was in black, extra points to Nick on lead guitar for his tight tight jeans. And there was a guest fill-in for keyboards and drums, who was adorable in the Franz tradition. If I remember correctly, he was sporting the classic white shirt/black tie combo. They were all as cute as a button, and the crowd ate it up. The great thing about Franz F. is that they know how to put on a show, but they never overdo it. They don't look like they are trying too hard. They know it's about style as well as substance. Especially that Alex Kapranos. Some of his moves seem inspired by Freddie Mercury, but in the best possible way. That man just radiates confidence and sex appeal on the stage. And he's got that cute Scottish accent. They played all our favorites from the first album, and then some beauties from the new CD. There were T-shirts to buy, but unfortunately not the cute accoutrements from the website, such as temporary tattoos and slap bracelets. Derek and I were also totally jazzed because they were doing a signing after the show at this nearby bar, the Dixie. Totally zero respect, this bar's motto is "Portland's only authentic rock n' roll bar". And yes, they have a mechanical bull. So Derek and I ran there as fast as we could, and ended up first in line (YAY!) but we had to wait for an hour and a half for Franz to show. But luckily, there was that mechanical bull to keep us entertained. And it only costs $5.00, or two ladies for $5.00. Now there's a bargain you don't get every day. This one slut spent the whole time trying to show off her bra and thong as much as possible, but the prize for the night went to our favorite girl. Picture this: over-bleached blond hair, jeans with large sections cut from the thighs with fishnets underneath, a pink corset, cowboy boots, and she had clipped a blinking light on the back of her jeans. Yes, blinking lights on her ass. I am not kidding. I thought Derek was going to fall over when he saw her. After, like, a week Franz finally arrived, but they were so cute, I forgave them immediately. They sat down, and Derek and I immediately began talking about them and pointing. They were like the most adorable little monkeys in a cage. Alex saw us staring, and he raised his drink and gave us a little nod. I almost swooned! They quickly signed our CD's, and said a little hello, we gave them mad props for the show, and got the hell out of that crazy bar. We could only imagine what Franz Ferdinand must think of the Pacific Northwest, as well as America. Totally great night, can't wait for next time, when we will party with Franz Ferdinand and convince them to marry us at Voodoo Doughnuts!
